It's in the Details
Pay attention to the details when you write. Many items can be fictionalized, but you should do your homework with the standards. So much is available on the Internet. Make sure that you've verified the details. Remember, readers check facts too.
For example, if you write about a character driving from Virginia Beach to Richmond, get the route numbers, directions, and average travel time correct. If it takes your character six hours to get there, you may want to explain what caused the delay.
I read somewhere once that a character drove to Virginia Beach to see the sunsets. I grew up there. The sunsets are nice, but they're in your rear view mirror if you're heading to the beach. The sunrises, however, are amazing.
