Bullets vs. Numbers

You can use bullets or numbers in your writing to organize or format lists. Make sure that you use the correct type. Bullets are for "non-ordered" lists. The items are not in any specific order. Numbers are for "ordered" lists.

The bullet or the number should be indented a half-inch from the left margin. The body of the list text should be indented from the bullet or number. The list should be left justified. Examples are as follows:

Bulleted List Example

  • Item 1
  • Item 2
  • Item 3

Numbered List Example

  1. Item 1
  2. Item 2
  3. Item 3

Be consistent with your tabs and your spacing. If you put a blank line before the first item in your list, make sure that you do that for all lists in your document.
