Interviews

We recently did a round of interviews for an IT technical resource. Below are some thoughts about interviewing:

1. Don't wear your phone ear piece to an interview. It comes across as if you're expecting a phone call that's more important than our interview.

2. Dress and act professionally. Bring copies of your résumé. Bring a pen and paper/notepad.

3. Avoid slang and casual/flip answers. Be professional.

4. If you're not sure how humor will be received, don't use it.

5. If you are participating in a phone interview, make sure that you're in a quiet place. (In the last few months, we had a candidate traveling in a car. In another situation, we could hear the person's dog barking loudly. And one time, we woke up the candidate for an 11:30 AM interview.)

6. Do ask intelligent, professional questions. Do a little homework before hand. If you know the company name, look them up on the web and get an idea of what they do.

7. Get control of your nerves. We all know what it's like to sit in the hot seat. Giggling, excessive talking, and squirming come across as not professional. You may be the best candidate in the world, but we can't tell because you're a bundle of nerves. (We don't know if you act like that all the time.)

8. Do not chew gum or have candy in your mouth. It's very distracting to the listener.
