Office Etiquette

I work in a mid-sized company, and I know most everybody. It still makes me crazy when someone prints something and leaves it on my desk with no note or context. I'm good, but I don't recognize everybody's handwriting. If you're going to leave something for me and you want me to do something with it, put a note on it or leave a voicemail/email about it.

Then there are personal cell phones...If you're at work, put your phone on vibrate. When I had a cube, the person next to me would leave her cell on her desk. She'd get 20 calls a day. (And her choice of ringtones left a lot to be desired.)

And if you're cell phone rings in a meeting, and it's an emergency, excuse yourself quietly and take the call outside. I have a co-worker who takes calls from her kids in the meeting. ("Yes, we keep the ketchup on the top shelf of the fridge." "No, stop hitting your brother.") It makes for an entertaining meeting.

And if you jam the copier or printer, tell someone who can fix it. Don't just walk off an leave it for the next poor victim who needs to have 35 sets made before a meeting. The same goes for the paper...If you use the last piece, replace it.
