Always Look for Opportunities...

Whatever your job title, you should look for opportunities to learn or try new job skills. Over the years, I've worked for one company that was purchased, and all jobs were restructured. (Some were changed, and others were eliminated.) I've also worked at one place where I survived 4 reorganizations. (Each time we got a new director, teams, job titles, and reporting structures changed.)

Protect yourself.

1. Even if you're not looking for a job, make sure that your résumé is up to date. It's much easier to make modifications when you need it than to have to try to remember what you've done over the last five years. Make sure that you keep track of all training and certifications that you have. These are important in many fields.

2. Always look for opportunities to expand or practice your skills. Right now, our project management office needs assistance for the current volume of new projects. To help fill some gaps, my folks in QA and Technical Writing are assisting with some business analysis work. We're also called on frequently to help when special training is needed.

3. If you find you have frequent down-time, talk with your supervisor to see if new responsibilities can be added. My company is very willing to work with folks who want to learn about other areas of the business.

4. Make sure that you have skills that your company can't live without. Look for writing, editing, proofreading, and public speaking opportunities.

5. Volunteer for special projects or work efforts. We have inter-departmental committees for annual giving campaigns and community service events. It's a great way to help and to meet folks in other areas of your company.

6. If you volunteer for something, make sure that you follow through.
