Contemporary Writer's Reference

I bought Arthur Plotnik's Spunk & Bite: A Writer's Guide to Bold, Contemporary Style. I'm enjoying it immensely. I bought it to stay current on contemporary trends in writing and editing. It's chock full of reference materials and ideas for all kinds of writers.

Plotnik reminds me of things I learned long ago (synecdoche and oxymoron). He also surprises me with interesting tidbits...

  • Enallage is using one part of speech for another. (I didn't know it had a name.)
  • Catacosmesis is providing content in descending order of importance.
  • Neologisms are invented or newly coined words.

Check out this great reference. It's full of surprises.
