Abbreviations and Acronyms
Be consistent when you use abbreviations and acronyms. Use standard ones. If you're working on a technical document, make sure to include a glossary. "ASP" can mean three or four different things.
Always define the acronym during its first use.
Be consistent with your capitalization and punctuation. Periods are often omitted now with acronyms. It's "HBO," "NATO," "CARE," and the "IRS."
Apostrophes are no longer used to make abbreviations or acronyms plural. It's "CDs," 'DVDs," and "VCRs."
If more than one person works on a document, make sure that the editor/proofreader gives the piece a once-over to ensure that all abbreviations/acronyms are consistent.
