Apostrophes
I've run into a lot of troublesome apostrophes lately in my proofreading adventures. Here are a few notes on the funny little mark of punctuation...
1. Do not use apostrophes to make nouns plural.
2. Do not use apostrophes to make family names plural. It should be "The Bakers" or "The Joneses." Make family names plural just like other nouns.
3. The apostrophe is usually not used to make acronyms plural. It's omitted so that you don't cause confusion with the possessive state. It should be "the SATs," "the DVDs," and "four CEOs."
