What Skills Do I Need?

I'm learning how to knit fuzzy scarves. (Thank you, Cindy for your patience and the lessons at lunch!) Learning something new is a challenge. (At the pace I'm going, I may have a scarf in 2010.) All the practice gave me time to think about my immature knitting skills and other skills.

People ask me from time to time about what skills is needed to be a technical writer. I think the following are key:

  • A proficient knowledge of language skills (grammar, punctuation, spelling)
  • The ability to be a good communicator or teacher
  • Attention to detail (the willingness to devote the time to ensuring consistency)
  • An aptitude with software or tools or a willingness to learn how things work
  • A working knowledge of conventions for print and web

Some Suggestions:

Keep your skills current. Don't get complacent and let technology pass you by.

Learn how to get along with others. You need people skills too.

Be a good listener. Practice good interviewing skills. (If you're learning how to do something, you shouldn't be doing all of the talking.)

Know that it takes a lot of work to translate technical concepts into good user guides.

Know the jargon of your industry. Know when to use and not use it.

When you're editing others' documents, use pens in colors other than red. People see a bloodbath of red ink, and they flashback to elementary school.
