Training and Travel When Money is Tight

Budgets are tight all over the place, but the work still needs to be completed. Be creative and think of ways to accomplish what needs to be done without breaking the bank.

1. Look at online meeting software packages. These can be used for meetings, training sessions, and other types of events where people need access to the same materials. Travel budgets have been cut, and sometimes, it's just not feasible to have 20 people go off-site.

2. Look at ways that your group or team can provide training or team-building exercises for your company. There are a lot of ideas out on the web, and sometimes, you can scale back, but still get the same effect from a smaller exercise. There are a lot of exercises that you can do in-house without traveling to a specialty site or by bringing in a group of facilitators.

3. Research ways to obtain training. Instead of conferences or seminars, there may be online classes. Some conferences and seminars will allow you to purchase the notes. If there's something that you're really interested in and you can't travel, maybe you could buy the session notes. Many of the speakers include their URLs or blog information. The session notes are usually a good resource for contacts.

4. If there are too many people to send to an event, send one, and then have that person report back to the others. Do a brown-bag session for your team when you return.
