According to this article by the School Library Journal, Tolkien's heirs are suing to have the rights of The Hobbit returned to the estate. It's sad that the author had to sell the rights to his works to pay taxes almost 40 years ago.

The Hobbit was the first Tolkien book that I fell in love with in the 7th grade. Thanks, Mrs. Carraher!
