Technical Writing - Evolving Roles

In this economy, everyone is doing more with less. Training, conference, and marketing budgets have been cut. Our role as a technical writer is evolving. Typically, our technical writers have been responsible for creating and maintaining user guides and training materials. In this economic downturn, we've been asked to come up with some creative ways to get things done to help other areas of the business.

Here are some of the types of things we've been asked to assist with...
  • Creating, proofreading and editing web content
  • Training new users on our web content management system
  • Providing facilitation skills for large meetings
  • Providing hardware training
  • Assisting with product and service research
  • Researching online meeting software and facilitating online meetings

Let me know if your job is changing because of today's economy. Are you doing the same types of things or are you being asked to do more?
