Style...And Choosing Your References

When you're trying to have everyone on your team use the same writing techniques, it's important to have a style guide. We decided as a group which professional style guide to follow. (You have lots to choose from...AP, MLA, Chicago Manual of Style.) We decided that the traditional writing ones didn't really cover technology questions, so we chose one for that, and we picked a third for web writing references. We also created our own guidelines for things specific to our company. We also partnered with our company's marketing department to ensure that we are following its branding guidelines for our logos and slogans.

When choosing reference guides or websites, be careful to pick reliable ones. Sometimes, you find some unreliable ones with some not-so-good advice.  Look for reference sites within your industry. We've had to find dictionaries for financial and computer terms. Many times websites for professional organizations have reference pages and glossaries.

There's a lot out there. Choose carefully. I've found a lot of spelling/grammar mistakes on dictionary sites.
