Domino's 15th Birthday
My little dog (our first dog as a married couple) turns 15 on Dec. 1, and despite being the grande dame, she's still going strong. (Her partner in crime is our other dog, Tig, a Jack Russell/Rat Terrier mix. He keeps her active with his antics and hyperactivity.) We rescued Domino Phoebe from puppy jail in 1994. I've been telling everyone that she's a Snottie (Schnauzer/Scottie mix), but our vet thinks that she's a Schnauzer/Doxie mix. Anyway, she takes more naps and has to go outside frequently, but she's still going strong for a dog with a lot of experience. (She doesn't like elderly or geriatric.)
Domino has been my muse. She listens to every speech or presentation that I have to do. She faithfully listens to all the tedious practice sessions. And her only feedback is an occasional raised eyebrow.
She waits patiently on her blanket in the office when I'm wrapped up in writing or work projects. She barks when she wants to go out. She makes sure that I take regular breaks to play ball or flying disc. (I tend to get lost in projects and lose track of time.)
And she's always there attempting to share whatever food I happen to have. And if I forget and turn my back, she always makes sure not to let any food go unattended.
My friend Chris sent me this link to Rita Mae Brown's article on CNN. Thanks, Chris! I thought it was appropriate since one of my best writing buddies is my dog, and I appreciate her encouragement and companionship. Happy Early Birthday!
