Tangier's Dr. Nichols

In a world with health care woes and stingy doctor and insurance tales, I found a bright spot this morning, even in a bittersweet story. Tangier Island (a small, isolated spot on Virginia's Eastern Shore) lost its doctor of 31 years. For over three decades, Dr. David B. Nichols flew to Tangier (usually on his day off) to treat the community that had no other doctor. He came by boat, helicopter, or small plane. He didn't do it for a profit. He did it because he cared.

In August, the new medical center on the island was named in his honor. The Richmond Times-Dispatch has a tribute article to Dr. Nichols.

It's nice to know that not all health care is just business.
