Michael Connelly's CHASING THE DIME
Michael Connelly is the master story-teller. His Chasing the Dime starts out with a successful professional, Henry Pierce, who gets a new phone number and a lot of wrong number calls. It turns out the number is the contact of an escort in LA. As he tries to contact her, he uncovers another seedy and violent world that doesn't mesh with the sterilized and predictable world of his lab.
The story moves from a wrong number to mob-controlled prostitution and S&M rings. He finds a lot more than he's looking for and even uncovers some painful memories from his childhood. Pierce finds himself as the prime suspect in the prostitute's disappearance, and he suddenly discovers that his well intended acts have been misinterpreted, and that he could lose everything by being falsely accused. The book has some good twists and turns.
I look forward to reading more of Connelly's other series.
