Edna Buchanan's THE ICE MAIDEN

I read The Ice Maiden by flashlight during Hurricane Irene. We lost power on Saturday night after dinner. Thankfully, it was just an inconvenience, and we didn't have damage like so many other places. Those suffering from the storm are in our thoughts and prayers!

The Ice Maiden
Buchanan's sleuth is a Miami newspaper reporter, Britt Montero. I love her style and depictions. I'm ready to visit Miami now. I also like how she mixes cultures.

Montero covers the death of a burglar who was electrocuted when he tried to break into the closed store. The young man has unusual scarring and a rap sheet a mile long. This leads Montero and the police to a cold case file. Years before, a teenaged couple were kidnapped on Christmas Eve. After murdering the male, the the teen girl was assaulted and left for dead.

Montero tracks down the gang accused of the kidnapping and the victim who is now a sculptor, specializing in large stone works and party ice sculptures.

The novel weaves through the history of the crimes, Miami's streets, and Britt Mortero's own personal life. The novel is set after 9-11, so the undercurrent of the terrorist attacks and the loss of hope is on a national level.

Mystery novels usually don't make me sentimental. Buchanan is a wonderful storyteller, and her ending really surprised me.
