LOCO MOTIVE - Mary Daheim

I loved the cover art for Mary Daheim's Loco Motive. I know - the whole book and its cover thing - but the expression on the bird's face is priceless.

Daheim's amateur sleuth (Judith) is a middle-aged bed-and-breakfast owner. Judith's son has a friend who's daredevil relative checks into the B&B because he's been banned from all other area hotels. The daredevil, Wee Willie Weevil, is an older thrill-seeker who injures himself in the opening scenes by jumping off the roof of her quaint B&B.

The cousins leave to take a cross-country train ride to Boston to meet their husbands for a conference. (Renie doesn't like to fly.) Coincidentally, some of the characters from the B&B end up on the same train. Missing persons, strange goings on, and a preschool clepto make the train trip an adventure.

By the time they get to North Dakota, the cousins have unraveled the mystery and returned some sort of order. Daheim does a nice job of describing the fun of train travel. I've added the cross-country trip (with the dead bodies) to my bucket list.
